COURSE LIST

Study Plan

The courses outlined on this page will be most effective if they are taken in the order defined in this study plan. Work group teams or cross-functional teams should complete the specified minimum courses before starting improvement projects to assure all team members can contribute to the fullest of their abilities.

Quality System Orientation

Quality System Orientation is the foundation course for all employees. It is a prerequisite for other quality and process improvement courses. In this short course (1/2 to 1 hour) students are introduced to the basic concepts of Quality Systems and why they are necessary. The course might be used to brief new employees on their responsibilities within a formal system such ISO 9000 or QS 9000 and it is useful in meeting the quality training requirements specified by those systems.

In the course we cover such subjects as quality concepts, processes, quality improvement, quality system elements, and quality audits.

A more in-depth coverage of ISO 9000 requirements is addressed in the ISO 9000 Basics course

Basic Quality Improvement Tools

Basic Quality Improvement Tools covers the seven classic tools used to improve quality. This is good follow-up course for employees that have completed the Quality System Orientation course and will take 3-5 hours to complete. It is intended as a first step to training your improvement teams but you may wish to have all employees take this course. The seven tools are:
- Flow Charts
- Data Collection Sheets
- Pareto Charts
- Histograms
- Correlation Charts (a.k.a. scatter diagrams)
- Control Charts (a.k.a. run charts)
- Cause and Effect Diagrams (a.k.a. fishbone diagrams)

Step by step use of the tools is explained. Examples and exercises demonstrate how the tools can be used independently and together to identify root causes of problems and develop possible solutions.

Improvement Teams

This course is useful for improving quality or improving business processes. The Quality System Orientation and Basic Quality Improvement Tools courses are prerequisites. We cover how to select problems, team organization, problem solving methods, root-cause analysis, and process improvement steps.

You should use the course to train new improvement teams prior to their organization. Successful completion of the course assures that all team members understand their roles and are prepared to contribute.

Improvement Teams takes 2-4 hours to complete and can be an important tool in satisfing the continual improvement requirement of ISO 9001:2000.

ISO 9000 Basics
